Great packable rain pants with one caveatJan 12, 2012

I like these pants. The fit is good around the waist with an elastic waist and button/fly combo, except it's a bit too long in length for me. If you cinch them up with the velcro on the bottom, they puff out right above the ankle. This gives you the appearance of "hammer pants" from yesteryear. Then again, I'm 5'4'' and have issues finding pants that fit regardless of maker. Usually I would just hem them, but the way these are designed it doesn't seem to be possible what with the velcro clasps and all.
These are made with the ConduitSilk material, which judging from my other Conduit pieces, should feel comfortable and wick sweat away with ease. These pants are no doubt completely waterproof and they are windproof, as I tested out today in about 15mph gusts. I hate how they don't have pockets, as I keep reaching for them to place my hands in or to deposit my cell into, and they're not there.. If they even had a side-zip pocket on the leg that would have been better. I can't judge them on that though since they're really meant to be pullover rain pants for inclement weather while active. They are very light and do pack up quite small. I will have no issue packing these into a daypack or similar 18L pack with a ton of other items. Pack space taken up by these is minimal. They do make some noise while walking in them, as can be expected from a pant like this, but it's a bit louder than I expected. Other pairs of pants I own similar to this one don't make that much noise, though they did cost me about 2-3 times as much.
I'm a pretty active hiker and backpacker/hiker/camper, I do hope this pieces' sole purpose isn't to keep you dry as you walk in a parking lot from your Subaru Outback into Whole Foods Market. It's for backtrail wet weather while active. The Conduit Epic Jacket didn't get such favorable reviews on Trailspace dot com, so let's hope these hold up a bit better.
On an aside, I do already own the Epic Gloves and let me tell you, not a better waterproof glove for the price you'll find.
We'll see how it well holds up on my ski trip this weekend, i'll post back my findings for sure on or around Jan. 17, 2012. So far, I've only given them a 3 because I haven't real-world tested them yet.

The only thing I don't like about the rainpants were the bottoms around the ankle. I wish they didn't have the elastic that way the pants would go over the shoes. They are nice and they do keep the water out.
